Our Jeopardy! hosting prayers have been answered. On Wednesday, Sony Pictures Television announced that actor, director, educator, and Jeopardy! superfan LeVar Burton has been tapped for a two-week guest-hosting run on ABC’s long running trivia show, which will air sometime this summer. CNBC’s David Faber as well as George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts, both of Good Morning America, are also among the final crop of guest hosts who will close out season 37.
Since the death of daytime television icon Alex Trebek in November of last year, Jeopardy! has been rotating guest hosts—with two-week stints from former news anchor Katie Couric, Dr. Oz, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and current guest host Anderson Cooper. Future guest hosts on the docket include Today’s Savannah Guthrie, Sanjay Gupta, CBS News journalist Bill Whitaker, and The Big Bang Theory actor Mayim Bialik.
While no one could ever replace Alex Trebek, the Roots and Star Trek: The Next Generation star has made it no secret that he feels he’s the best person for the job. “I feel as strongly about my rightness for this as I did about Kunta and Geordi,” Burton said on the USA Today podcast The Mothership on Friday, referencing his iconic characters in those previous projects. “And I’m that invested in getting the job.”
He’s not alone in that belief. Over 240,000 people have signed a change.org petition calling for the former Reading Rainbow host to become the next permanent host of Jeopardy!. As for the guest-hosting stint, Burton said on social media that he was “overjoyed, excited, and eager” for the opportunity. Perhaps he’ll follow the reading rainbow all the way from guest host to permanent host.
